Just like your braces, your removable retainer represents a serious investment in realigning your teeth and improving the overall function of your mouth. Wearing your retainer during the prescribed times and keep it properly cleaned are both essential to maintaining the new alignment of your teeth.

You should always keep your retainer in its case, when you are not wearing it. It’s a good habit to simply keep the case with you, rather than improvise by keeping it in a napkin or a plastic bag.

To refresh your retainer you can soak it in a mixture of one-half antiseptic mouthwash and one-half cold water.

If you have a Hawley type retainer, you can brush it with a soft bristled toothbrush and nonabrasive toothpaste. This will help remove any plaque buildup and keep the retainer fresh.

Clear plastic retainers can be dulled or damaged by brushing. Instead, you can try to rinse them thoroughly and soak in a water and antiseptic mouthwash solution.
