What to Do if You Have a Broken Bracket

Posted .

Broken brackets are a pain, especially because they can mess with your treatment time. But there are things you can do to help the situation until you see your orthodontist.

Some of the things you can do include:

No. 1: Check to see if the wire is still attached to the bracket. If it is, simply put orthodontic wax around it to keep it in place. Please do not play with it. If the wire is no longer attached to the bracket, simply remove it from your mouth and bring it into the orthodontic office during your next appointment.

No. 2: If there are any protruding wires that are poking or bothering you, clip the wire with a pair of fingernail clippers as short as possible. Or, you can also try putting it back into place with a pencil eraser or Q-Tip.

No. 3: Book an appointment. It is very important that you see your orthodontist as soon as possible so you can get the bracket fixed. If you don’t, it could damage your smile and lengthen your treatment time.
